What the date means
- IELTS recommends treating results as valid for 2 years from the test date.
- Universities, employers and immigration authorities set their own policies. Some are stricter than 2 years, and some accept older results.
- Check the specific institution before you apply. The date above is a guideline, not a guarantee.

Questions, answered
How long is an IELTS score valid?+
IELTS recommends treating results as valid for 2 years from the test date. After that, most institutions and immigration bodies ask for a new result.
Does the 2 years start on the test date or the results date?+
It counts from the test date, not the day your results come out. Results usually arrive a few days after a paper test and sooner after a computer-delivered test, so the gap is small.
Can a university or employer set a different validity period?+
Yes. IELTS gives the 2-year guideline, but each university, employer, regulator and immigration authority decides what it accepts. Some want a score from the last 12 months, some accept older results, and some date the score on the day you apply, not the day you arrive.
Is the validity period the same for Academic and General Training?+
Yes. The 2-year guideline applies to both modules. What counts is the test date on your Test Report Form.
What if my score expires before I apply?+
You would normally need to retake the test. Check which date your institution uses (application date, offer date or course start date) before you book.
Can I extend or renew an IELTS result?+
No. A result keeps the test date it was issued with. If it is too old for your purpose, you need a new test.
Where do I check the rule that applies to me?+
The admissions page of your institution or the website of the immigration authority. That rule wins over any general guideline, including this one.
How do I plan a retake once my score is close to expiring?+
Work out the band you need, then practise the weakest section first. The band score calculator shows which section is pulling your overall band down, and a SmoothMock mock test shows why.
