How the math works
Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 raw points, then converted to a band from 0 to 9 using a fixed scale. The scale isn't linear: the middle bands compress more raw marks into one band than the top and bottom do. Reading also has two separate scales depending on whether you sat Academic or General Training, since General Training passages are written to be more accessible.
Writing and Speaking skip the raw-score step. An examiner scores each against four public criteria: for Writing, Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy; for Speaking, Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. The result is already a band, so this tool takes that band directly.
The overall band is the average of all four, rounded up to the nearest half band. It never rounds down and never rounds to the nearest value. In practice: double the average, round up to the next whole number, then halve it. An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5. An average of 6.75 becomes 7.0. An average that's already a multiple of 0.5, like 6.5, stays where it is.

The exact tables the calculator above runs on. Each is the commonly published indicative scale, sourced below its column. IELTS equates every test version separately and doesn't release one fixed table, so real boundaries can move by about a mark in either direction from one sitting to the next.

Questions, answered
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?+
It's the average of your four skill bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), then rounded up to the nearest half band. IELTS states it as: if the average ends in .25 it rounds up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75 it rounds up to the next whole band. The overall band never rounds down.
Why do I enter a raw score for Listening and Reading but a band for Writing and Speaking?+
Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 questions, then converted to a band using a published scale. Writing and Speaking have no raw score. An examiner assesses your response directly against the public band descriptors and gives a band, so there's nothing to convert.
Is the Reading conversion the same for Academic and General Training?+
No. General Training passages are designed to be more accessible, so its conversion table is more lenient. You generally need more correct answers than Academic to reach the same band. Listening uses one table for both.
Is this the exact table IELTS will use on my test?+
It's the commonly published indicative scale, cited below with sources. IELTS equates every test version separately, so real raw-score boundaries can shift by about 1 mark either way between sessions. Use this tool to estimate and practice, not as your official score.
