How to use it
- Mark your practice test and count the correct answers out of 40.
- Enter the number in the box. There is no module switch, because Listening is the same for Academic and General Training.
- Read your band, and see how many more correct answers it takes to reach the next one.
Need your overall band across all four sections? Use the IELTS band score calculator, or check every cutoff on the band score chart.

Questions, answered
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Listening?+
30 out of 40 gives band 7.0 on the commonly published scale. 32 gets you to 7.5.
Is the Listening table the same for Academic and General Training?+
Yes. Both modules share the same Listening test and the same raw-score-to-band scale.
Is this my official Listening band?+
No. IELTS equates each test version separately, so real cutoffs can move by about a mark between sittings. Use the result as a close estimate for practice.
Do spelling mistakes lose marks in Listening?+
Yes. A misspelled answer is marked wrong, even if you heard the right word. Check spelling when you review a practice test.
How is IELTS Listening scored?+
Each of the 40 questions is worth one mark. Your raw score is the number you got right, and it is converted to a band from 0 to 9 in half-band steps.
What Listening score do I need for band 6.5?+
On the commonly published scale, 26 to 29 correct answers give band 6.5, and 23 to 25 give band 6.0.
Is the Listening table the same on paper and on computer?+
Both formats are scored on the same 0 to 9 band scale. IELTS equates each test version separately, so the exact cutoffs can shift by about a mark. Use this table as an estimate either way.
How does my Listening band affect my overall band?+
Your overall band is the average of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, rounded to the nearest half band. Enter all four in the band score calculator to see where you land.
How can I raise my Listening score?+
Work out which kind of mistake costs you marks (distractors, spelling, missed paraphrases), then practise that under test conditions. Audio plays once in the real test, so practise with one listen only.
