What your fee actually buys you

One fee covers all four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — plus your first Test Report Form. Score lower than you hoped and a retake means paying the full fee again, unless a One Skill Retake option is offered here. And a no-show without cancelling ahead of time forfeits the entire fee, so always reschedule in advance if you can't make your test date.

Why the fee is only half the cost

British Council is the only body running IELTS in Ethiopia, and it doesn't discount a repeat test. ETB 32,800 buys one sitting of the standard test, ETB 37,500 for UKVI, and missing your target band means paying that again in full.

With both test centres in Addis Ababa, a retake usually means a second trip to the capital on top of the fee itself, which raises the real cost of getting the format wrong the first time. Hearing the Listening audio only once, typing Writing Task 2 against a 40-minute timer, and fielding Speaking Part 3's unscripted follow-ups all catch candidates who've mainly practiced offline or by hand, common outside Addis Ababa where computer-based prep is harder to find.

A free run on SmoothMock uses that same four-skill, computer-delivered format British Council runs in Addis Ababa, marked against the band criteria an examiner would use. Doing that before you travel in for the real test means the trip pays for a format you already know.

The mock's Speaking round runs with an AI examiner that actually follows up on what you say. Writing comes back tagged by error type instead of a flat score, so you know whether Coherence or Grammatical Range is the real problem. Listening plays once, no repeats, the same as it will at Addis Ababa University or the Comoros Street centre.

Paying ETB 32,800 for IELTS in Ethiopia? Make it count the first time.

SmoothMock grades a full-length attempt against the same band descriptors an examiner uses — sit it before you book the real thing.

Refund & reschedule policy

Refunds

Cancel up to 5 weeks before your test date for a refund minus a 25% administration fee; no refunds within 5 weeks except with a medical certificate submitted within 2 calendar days of the test date, still minus the 25% charge. Refunds take 4-6 weeks to process. IELTS UKVI uses a different scale: a 75% refund if you cancel more than 14 days before the test.

Rescheduling

No Ethiopia-specific reschedule terms were published separately from the cancellation policy above. Treat a transfer request the same as a cancellation for refund purposes, and confirm current terms with your test centre before booking.

How this compares regionally

At roughly $201, Ethiopia's standard fee is the lowest of any country covered here so far, below Nigeria's roughly $222 and well under the UAE's roughly $400. With only two test centres, both in Addis Ababa, candidates outside the capital face travel costs on top of the fee itself.

Questions, answered

Ethiopia-specific questions, plus what every IELTS test-taker should know about the fee.

Does IDP administer IELTS in Ethiopia?+

No evidence of an active IDP test centre in Ethiopia turned up in our research. British Council appears to be the sole administrator, running centres at Addis Ababa University and on Comoros Street in Addis Ababa.

Can I pay for IELTS with mobile money in Ethiopia?+

Not based on the payment options British Council Ethiopia publishes. Payment is by direct deposit at a Commercial Bank of Ethiopia branch, with a scanned bank slip and ID emailed to confirm.

Is IELTS Life Skills cheaper than the standard test in Ethiopia?+

Yes, ETB 21,200 for IELTS Life Skills (A1 or B1), versus ETB 32,800 for Academic or General Training.

How much does IELTS UKVI cost in Ethiopia?+

ETB 37,500, compared to ETB 32,800 for standard Academic or General Training.

How long does an IELTS refund take to process in Ethiopia?+

4-6 weeks for a standard cancellation made 5 or more weeks before your test date. IELTS UKVI refunds follow a different scale: 75% back if you cancel more than 14 days out.

Are there IELTS test centers outside Addis Ababa in Ethiopia?+

Not based on the centres we could confirm. Both official British Council test centres are in Addis Ababa, so candidates elsewhere in the country need to travel to sit the test.

What's included in the IELTS fee?+

The fee covers all four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — plus one Test Report Form (TRF) sent to you and, if requested at registration, to a limited number of institutions or visa bodies free of charge. Extra copies of your TRF beyond the included number usually cost extra.

How long is an IELTS result valid for?+

Two years from the test date, for both Academic and General Training. Most universities and immigration authorities won't accept a TRF older than that, so time your test around your application or visa deadline.

Do I need to pay the full fee again if I fail or I'm unhappy with my score?+

Yes, for a full retake — IELTS doesn't have a discounted retake fee. Some countries offer a cheaper IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR), letting you re-sit just one section instead of all four, where available.

What documents do I need to book and pay for IELTS?+

A valid passport (the same one you'll bring on test day) is required at registration — your name and passport number must match exactly, since a mismatch can block you from sitting the test or collecting results.

Is the IELTS fee refundable if I don't turn up on test day?+

No — a no-show without prior cancellation forfeits the full fee under both British Council and IDP's global policy. Always cancel or transfer in advance if you can't make it, rather than skipping the test.
